Alexander Calder had many influences throughout his life. His first major influence that had an everlasting effect on him was his parents and relatives. His father, Alexander Stirling Calder was a sculptor who showed him what the art form of sculpting was really like. Unlike his father, his grandfather Alexander Milne Calder, paved the way for the Calder’s success. Through the world, the Calder’s were known for creating sculptures and beautiful pieces. Alexander had to keep up with the expectations his family set. Even though this may have put stress on him, he didn’t show it in his works.
Even though Calder’s grandfather and relatives had an everlasting effect on him, the biggest influence in his life was Joan Miró. Over the course of a few years, they gained a “lasting friendship.” This person inspired him to create beautiful pieces that inspire generations to come. Although Alexander may of had some influences here and there throughout his life, the main influences in his life were his family and Joan Miró.
